Gina Anne Johnnie, former YWCA of Salem Board Member, will be a table captain at the 16th Annual Women Helping Women Benefit Lunch on March 6, 2012, at Salem’s Conference Center. The event raises money for the purpose of providing needed services to women and families in our community. Among other programs, the YWCA operates the Salem Outreach Shelter, provides free breast cancer and cervical cancer screenings to women in need, runs a breast cancer support group, manages cultural awareness, human rights and racial justice programs, runs the Da Vinci Girls program with the A.C. Gilbert’s Discovery Village, and manages the Children Cope with Divorce and Rollercoaster programs.
Salem Outreach Shelter is a transitional housing program for homeless families in Marion and Polk Counties. Ten families reside at the shelter at one time for an average of three months. During their stay, each family strives for a successful future with permanent housing, stable income, and a resource base to obtain long term stability.
Children Cope with Divorce is a court mandated class for divorcing or separating parents in Marion County. The focus is to help parents guide their children through the divorce process in positive ways. Rollercoasters is a program helping children learn about divorce and separation through games and activities.
